Echoes in the Dark
05:15
|
|||
It seems that my whole life’s been spent behind these walls
I have no memory of the other side.
The whispers of the others echo through the halls
My world’s a corner where nightmares hide
The darkness doesn’t cause me pain
Nor do the cries of the insane.
I hear echoes in the dark (voices crying in the night)
The jilted lover counts up every tear he’s cried. He lost the one he held so dear.
The Priest lived well until his orthodoxy died. They throw the heretics in here.
The darkness doesn’t cause me pain, nor do the cries of the insane.
I hear echoes in the dark [of voices crying in the night]
The dissident was caught in a plot against the king. And now he’s trapped inside these walls.
He said he only wants to see a world that’s free for his philosophy.
That’s what he shouted. That’s what he shouted down the hall.
There’s no way out of here.

I saw her on a summer morning.
The sun was dim before the light in her eyes.
Her flaxen hair fell on her shoulder.
Oh, the world cannot see the joy there would be if it only made room for love.
I fixed my mind upon her laughter.
Her life became my world, her smile my god.
Her voice was my angelic chorus.
All the days of my life, through pain and through strife, I’d give it all for love
With fire in our hearts, our minds in the clouds, we fly
They said I watched her through her window
A sad conspiracy now keeps us apart
Her father made the watchman grab me.
Oh, the world cannot see the joy there would be if it only made room for love.

Master of Theology has no meaning in the realm of eternity.
The priests always speak the words, but don’t know what they mean, they haven’t seen the things I’ve seen.
(Prechorus) With open eyes we see the dawn - a whole new world bathed in light. Reject the ghosts of childhood fears, leave them banished to the night.
(Chorus) We are entering a new age.
Know the divine in a new way.
Our God won’t be contained in a cage of his words.
The mind of flesh can’t understand the spirit of our age, the spirit of our land.
Before the brick and mortar fails and churches crumble to the ground, come take a look at what I found.
(Prechorus)
With open eyes we see the dawn - a whole new world bathed in light.
Reject the ghosts of childhood fears, leave them banished to the night.
(Chorus) We are entering a new age.
Know the divine in a new way.
Our God won’t be contained in a cage of his words.
(Bridge)
No longer shall we be subject to the church of clerical neglect.
No more submission, we’ll stand tall. Our God is one. Our God is all.

The listless mob is a hammer
Wielded by the heads of state
Dull and graceless in its power
To destroy and to create
Who needs a kingdom to govern?
Who needs a seat on a throne?
Who placed one man over others.
To rule a people alone?
(prechorus)
My fight - is for your minds.
Bring sight to the blind
No more kings and nobles
No more political greed
No more unending collusion
A new design’s what we need.
there’s a Revolution in my head
a new age has entered, we must make a stand
Yes I will stand and I will fight to prove this land is our birthright

Fear in the Night
06:45
|
|||
The voices turn to silence, the doctor’s down the hall.
Coming once again to give his treatments to us all.
Bitter drinks for the others, give them painful dreams
I’ve been spared, but instead it’s icy baths for me.
The shocking chill makes me ache in my bones
I shiver, suffering alone.
It always was the same, but tonight they come for me
I must take the bitter drink that gives the painful dreams.
The servants take me to a cell and strap me to the wall.
The liquid’s poured into my mouth. I gag, then drink it all.
The bitter burning makes me gasp for breath
I shudder, and wait for it to take effect
I can hear, the cries of fear
in the night, the doctor does his work
The doctor says that this will open my eyes
show me the life I’ve been denied
The doctor says he knows that this is the cure
I’m not convinced. He seems so sure.
The doctor says that he knows all of my past.
Why can’t he tell me, and release me at last?
The doctor says that for my life to be known,
I can’t be told, I must be shown.
I fail to understand the certainty of this man.
I can’t see how he’s cured the others...
...by drawing Icy baths and pouring drinks of bitter gall
for the dissident, the vicar and lover
The whole arrangement is untenable, irrational,
devoid of human reason
Some day if I get out the world will have no cause to doubt
this doctor’s an evil demon.
The doctor says that this will open my eyes
show me the life I’ve been denied
The doctor says that for my life to be known,
I can’t be told, I must be shown. I must be shown.
I can hear, the cries of fear
in the night, the doctor does his work

Watercolor Nightmare
04:10
|
|||
My eyes are getting heavier, I lean against the wall
The final point of light just fades away.
My knees are weak, my legs collapse, I slump and then I fall.
I call for help but find no words to say.
Drifting From the world
I see the other side
Now the scales are falling
Now the scales are falling from my eyes
the truth lies behind the veil of perception

Consume
03:27
|
|||
Love cannot satiate his hunger
Romantic thoughts don’t fill his mind
Those sentimental notions just serve his appetites
to his own sickness he is blind
A subconscious hideaway
keeps the lover searching for his prey
A rich boy saved by father’s money
Lives an inconsequential life
Until obsession strikes and passion fills his eyes
his love becomes a gleaming knife
Consume
Possess
Try to hide the appetite, but the lust can’t be suppressed
The sky is black on winter evenings
And empty as the hollow souls
Who consume the lives of others
To try and fill the gaping hole
Oh the world cannot see how blind it can be.
Consume
Possess
Try to hide the appetite, but the lust can’t be suppressed

30 Pieces of Gold
05:59
|
|||
The world is looking for a god who gets out of its way
And if the vicar can deliver, they’re all too glad to pay
The coins into the coffers ring (the angels sing)
For those with means to pay, there is no need to pray
He says that god in heaven will fulfill all your desires
You can trust if you spend enough he’ll pluck you from the fire
The future is now, come into the fold.
He’ll sell you god for 30 pieces of gold
Cherubim and Seraphim descend
the winding stair that reaches Heaven’s end
They stare into the gaping void
And whisper the judgement whisper the judgement on men.
Faceless souls bound in golden chains
Murmur empty words and dead refrains
Their hands eternally reach for more
But it’s all taken (it’s all taken) it’s all taken away
The future is now, come into the fold.
He’ll sell you god for 30 pieces of gold

The Dead are in the Wind
04:32
|
|||
Standing in the corner, practicing a speech
A dissident philosopher thinks his plans are within reach
He denies submission to any god or king
he would take their place and have power o’er everything
He will be heard
Obey his word
Just be assured
That he will take control
The lover and the vicar would fill their bellies full
But this man has made his plan, he wants to take it all
Enlightened men aren’t tyrants, and demagogues aren’t kings
But lunatic dictators take power from anything
Now the dream is dying
And the nightmare meets its end
Now the living are the dying
And dead are in the wind
The lover, dead and gone
won’t sing his lonesome song
His hunger just consumes him in his grave
The vicar’s body torn
on a bed of golden thorns
His silver tears cannot free the wolfish slave
The dissident now sits alone
Nailed onto his wooden throne
Despite his plan to rule us all
He found that he was still in thrall
to hungers that he couldn’t sate
and so he seethed with violent hate
“the Doctor killed the others and he’s going to kill us all!”
Nobody heard
A single word
So self-assured
until he lost control

Man Without a Life
04:21
|
|||
I awake to eerie silence in the hall
Seems that it wasn’t just a dream. Maybe the doctor killed them all.
I hear them say it’s time for me (draw an icy bath)
There’s nowhere to run, I cannot flee (there is no other way)
Now I am the last man left - a man without a life
What fear should I have of death - I never had a life
The doctor looks at me, and says he’ll give me all
A memory, a life and more - a chance to step outside these walls
Join me now, he says to me (step into the bath)
Have no fear, no need to flee (this is the only way)
Plunged beneath the icy depths - I’m a man without a life
Only living men fear death - I’m a man without ...

Epilogue
08:47
|
|||
I awake in the garden
Beneath the trees
Looking back, I see the madhouse
My past is looking back at me.
I remember now
what I forgot somehow
Now my life has been retrieved
Once I was a clever student
and I thought I knew it all
I became the village vicar
then I heard the siren call
I became a man
That I don’t understand
I lost myself within his walls
I was fooled by my own rules and fell into obsession
Wealth and love, and God above to me were just possessions
Any rationale could justify my acquisitions
But trapped inside my thoughts I was in terrible condition
Maybe I’m just a foolish dreamer
with the sun in my eyes
Even though I was a silly schemer
those days have passed me by
Walking toward the city lights
Shining in the darkest night
Like the moon above and a billion stars
Step out into the sunshine
You have nothing left to hide
Feel earth below and release your cares.
